The genocide of an estimated 500,000 Sinti and Roma during National Socialism is still considered the “forgotten Holocaust”. The exhibition focuses on the persecution of the Sinti and Roma, from their exclusion and disenfranchisement in the German Reich to the systematic extermination in Nazi Europe. The dehumanizing perspectives of the perpetrators are contrasted with the testimonies of the victims, and old photographs and archived data offer insight into the reality of their lives.
The exhibition is divided into three parts: The first chapter explores the origins of the persecution of the Roma, “An Introduction to Genocide before the Second World War”, the second chapter covers “The Genocide of the Roma – Nazi atrocities during the Second World War“, and the third chapter deals with “The post-war history and contemporary challenges of the Roma genocide”. Through these sections, the exhibition reveals the destroyed lives behind the bureaucratic documents that record the organized destruction. Finally, you will gain information about the human rights situation of the Sinti and Roma minorities in Europe after 1989.
